Discovered almost by chance in 1921, this ancient imperial residence represents the most important testimony of the late antique villas in the Garda area, famous throughout the world for the extraordinary beauty and preservation of its floor mosaics.<\/p>\n<h2>The Story: A Luxury Residence on the Lake<\/h2>\n<p> The villa was built at the end of the 1st century BC, but experienced its heyday between the 4th and 5th century AD. It is assumed that the mansion belonged to Flavius Magnentius or, more likely, to Decentius, brother of the emperor Magnentius, from whom the name of the city of Desenzano would derive.<\/p>\n<p>The original structure covered an area of about 11,000 square metres, directly overlooking the lake with loggias and gardens.
